Colour Me Rad – Vancouver

24 May

I was wasting time again today, creeping Facebook, tweeting away and taking pictures of old drawings I’ve done – when I came about a bunch people going on about “Color Me Rad”.  My curiousity was piqued.  Colour?  Me?  Rad?  What on earth could they be talking about?!  So I Googled.  Boy am I glad I Googled.  Colour Me Rad (pardon my Canadian way of spelling colour) is a 5k run, with a twist,  raising funds for Keep A Breast Canada.  The race takes place August 18th at 9am at Thunderbird Stadium at UBC.  You’re probably wondering, okay, this is for charity, so how much!?  Well, here’s a bit of info:

Early Bird Registration            $40.00          Deadline          June 1st

Regular Registration                 $45.00          Deadline          July 6th

Late Registration                        $50.00          Deadline          August 3rd

Now for the colour bit…Don’t worry!  They don’t use anything that will burn your skin off, give you blisters or infect you.  Unless of course you’ve got some sort of allergy.  According to their site the colour is “non-toxic, non-rash-inducing, Kroger branded, coloured corn-starch.  Subsidized by the government and processed in the USA”.  They even state that “[the] blasts of starch will change your colour, and your demeanor but never your level of wellness”.  So there you have it!  If you’re not intrigued, I don’t know what to tell ya.  Contact them, ask your questions.  But what I know is this, I AM TOTALLY sold.  Just look at the pictures!

PS.  Now just to get the friends to join :( lol.

A little scatterbrained.

23 May

Is scatterbrained a word?  I was typing it out, put a space between “scatter” and “brained” but even that didn’t look right.  Although, what I have written out doesn’t look all that right either.  (Note: this is how I’ve been all day).  When I decided I wanted to write something out tonight I couldn’t figure out what I’d start with or where I’d go.  So here goes.

First!  Can I just tell you how honestly heartbroken I am that House is over?  Obviously, you clued in by my last post House, Hugh Laurie & heartbreak.  I feel, though, that I should explain to you why.  Well, reiterate why.  Besides that it was a show unlike any other, sarcastic asshole being the main character, a show that played for eight long years and questioned every viewers ideals for even remotely liking a sarcastic asshole.  Gregory House wasn’t all that bad.  If you haven’t seen the final episode of the series then you might want to stop reading here.  When, I thought he was dead, when that building exploded, I was frantic.  How could they end eight years just like that!  Luckily, they didn’t.  When House sent Wilson that text saying “shut up you fool”, I knew he wasn’t really dead.  House did the nicest, kindest most genuine thing he could have done.  He let everyone believe he really did die in that inferno in order to spend Wilson’s last few months together.  So, people, this is why we love him.  Deep down, EVERYONE, believed that there was some good in House.  At least, I know I did.  I will admit this, I cried like a seven year old girl who has lost her favourite Barbie.  Not at the end of the show, but the beginning.  WAH!

Second!  I was going to do a chevron bracelet tutorial, like I said I would, but honestly I just don’t have the time to take the pictures and explain how to.  This will have to wait a little while longer.  If you can’t wait, I am really sorry :(,but our dear friend Google can help.

Third!  I was on Pinterest again last night, as usual, and came by an absolutely easy and delicious recipe for pistachio and rose water ice cream.  Yep, the picture above.  Doesn’t that just look and sound dreamy?  I literally went “…god” as I saw the picture for it and almost died when I read the recipe.  S-I-M-P-L-E.   Rather than typing the recipe and preparation out, here’s the link – Javane’s Kitchen.  Check out her other recipes, if you like (or as I do, love) Persian cuisine, you’ll fall for her recipes.

NEXXXXT…..I came by this app called Inkflow a few days ago.  I’m one of those people who LOVES to doodle and actually write out notes.  I’ve tried a bunch of different apps in the last few years of owning an iPhone and nothing has quite compared to this.  It’s not entire too sensitive and very very easy to control.  There is a free version and a paid version.  Give it a shot if you’re like me.  Click the photo or the link below for more info :).

House, Hugh Laurie & heartbreak

21 May

ImageThe end is near…

I don’t know how I feel about this.  Around February 8th, 2012, Fox letall House fans that this season would be their last.  I have a bunch of questions.  The most important and crucial being – WHY?!?!?!

Why on Earth would you end such a gut wrenching, thought provoking, hilarious and unreal show?  I mean, c’mon!  I’ve been a HUGE House fan since the show first debuted in 2004.  I was only, approximately, 16 at the time and could have followed all the other shows on TV (ex. The OC) but there was something about Gregory House that grabbed onto my teenage mind.  In all honestly it was probably his superficial, sarcastic manner.  And insanely bright blue eyes.  Yes, I’m a geek, I know.

Seriously though, I’ve heard a lot of people say “well how can the show even go on?”, “what else are they going to do?”, “how many moreshocking illnesses can he cure?”, “it lost it’s charm a long time ago”.  My answer to all of that is simple, they still have Survivor on TV.  Survivor.  Seriously.  No offense to all anyone who watches that show, but I was asking the same questions asked about House after the first Survivor.  It’s all the same dilly dally bologna.

So how can they keep House going?  He’s a sarcastic, S-O-B genius!  A show CAN, and has been, based on less.  Killing Wilson off, or House off or whatever happens tonight is sad.  Just absolutely sad.  I understand they’re trying to end the series, but it’s rushed.  Why rush the end?  Hm?  Besides, what else am I supposed to watch on Monday nights?  Or PVR for that matter.

I mean sure, I can get my Hugh Laurie fill (hehehe) any day – watch his movies, listen to his music but I won’t be watching or listening to the same character I’ve enjoyed for the last eight years.

I’m heartbroken.

Born in the wrong generation

20 May

Have you ever thought you were born in the wrong generation?  I can’t help but think I was.  There’s just something about 1930s to 1950s that gets my heart beating.  The music, the clothes, the art, the cars!  Ah!

It’s funny thinking about it… while tapping away on my laptop, checking my texts ever two seconds, waiting for that certain someone to text back (yeah, I’m a total sob).  But seriously!  All day, today, I’ve been working on math home and listening to good ol’ rockabilly tunes, big bands and swing.  It seems to have got me thinking more and more about the times where things were slightly more simple.  Mind you, were they?  I mean, heck, people had to actually SEE each other, pick up a pen and paper and WRITE.  Holy moly ;).  I don’t think I’ve written an actual letter in forever.

Nostalgia is beautiful.

Which brings  me to my next thought.  Do I really think I was born in the wrong era?  I have to say, yes and no.  If it weren’t where we are now, I wouldn’t be able to listen to avariety of music.  Which wouldn’t really help my silly music A.D.D.  However, then it gets me thinking, would I even have music A.D.D. back then?  I mean sure, there were different genres then too but how many of them would have been at my finger tips?

It’s just such an odd thought because you find yourself wanting to be there, dying to be there but could any of us leave where we are now (if we could) and go back to whatever era we are in love?  Would we love it the same in that case?  It reminds me of a Owen Wilson and Rachel McAdams movie – Midnight in Paris.  They bring up this very same thought through out the movie.  Well, Owen Wilson’s character does.  I, highly, recommend it.  It’s almost got a dark humour to it.  Anywho…

Just food for thought.  I can tell you right now, I would miss the hell out of my iPhone and laptop.  Oh and PVR.  Can’t forget about PVR.  If it weren’t for that, I’d never be able to watch my shows ;).

Which now brings me to my other random “thing” of the day.

Rather than baking or cooking today, to go with my Nostalgic Nancy feeling, I decided to make little bracelets for my sister.  DIY chevron bracelets, in all black, with a teal bead clasp.  They turned out super cute.  Thank you Pinterest, once again!  I’ll do a tutorial when I decide to get different colour embroidery thread – it’s just far too annoying with black.

So there ya have it – my long weekend Sunday, spent in an entirely different world :).

Sunshine, strawberries and songs

19 May

It’s a sunny, spring Saturday.  It honestly can’t get better than this.  Aside from a sunny, SUMMER Saturday.

I said I’d post the recipe for my strawberry oat bars on Friday, unfortunately I got a little sidetracked once again.  So, I’m typing it out today :).

The Ingredients:

1 cup rolled oats

1/2 cup all-purpose flour

1/4 teaspoon salt

3 tablespoons brown sugar

1/4 cup sugar

1/3 cup butter, softened

1 cup strawberry jam

The Preparation:

1.  Preheat the oven to 350°.  Lightly grease pan

2.  In a medium bowl combine first 7 ingredients until the mixture comes together – coarse crumb

3.  Press 2/3s of the mixture into the prepared pan.  Spread the jam onto the crust.

4.  Here I made a chocolate mixture using cocoa powder, some sugar and milk and spread that on top of the strawberry jam.

5.  Sprinkle the rest of the mixture on top

6.  Bake for roughly 20 to 30 minutes.

7.  Cool and eat :).
There you have it, super super simple recipe!!  – I was going to take pictures however when it came time to, the family had consumed all of the oat bars :(.  BOO!

Now for the other part of my daily blah blah blah.

This little girl, is the love of my life.  No joke.  She drives me crazy, like any “child” drives their mother crazy..but I adore her with every fiber of my being.

Saying that though, it truly is a shame that she despises the sunshine.  She hides.  We went to the dog park and she spent the entire time in the tall grassy area, hiding.  Meanwhile, I’m basking in all of the suns glory.

I wonder how she’ll do on a nice summer hike.  I’m not prepared to care her or find her a mini umbrella hat.  Although, I have to be honest here, how incredibly badass would that be?  A dog with an umbrella hat.  I’d feel like a total goof walking her.  But at least she’d walk and not make me drag her behind.  Hmmm..ideas are forming!  You must think I’m crazy, which is partially true.  Who isn’t though?

Anyways!  There just is nothing like this beautiful sunshine and warm weather we’re experience in beautiful British Columbia, in the middle of May!  HEAVEN.  Which brings me to my other point.  Songs.

You know how there are songs that just don’t sound the same when you listen to them during fall or winter?  I have to say that Sublime’s “Santeria”, “Summer Time”(well duh!) & “What I got” – to name a few; City and Colour’s “The grande optimist”, “O’ Sister” as well as a bunch of Tiger Army, Lady Antebellum and T.Swift songs are just like that.  Everyone has their “summer” tracks.  And sometimes we get fooled into playing them a wee bit early ;).  Like now for instance.  What are your summer tracks?  Think about it.  Let me know, if ya want to :).

Why do you build me up (build me up) Buttercup, baby

17 May

Today’s anthem of the day is ….Yeah, you guessed it – Build me up buttercup.  You’re probably wondering why.  Well, first of all, I’d like to say, what a terrible song.  Terrible for two reasons.  One, it’s TERRIBLY catchy.  Two, it’s so so so so sad.  I’m not going to sing out (type out) the lyrics.  GOOGLE is amazing.  So, my advice to you – Google it!  You’ll understand what I mean.

It’s today’s anthem due to the mere fact that I’ve just realized that I haven’t written something in months.  I built you all up only to bring you down (see what I did there?;)).  I was on a roll for a while and then this blog was interrupted by the daily happenings of what ismy life.  HOWEVER, once I realized that I haven’t written in years, upon years, I thought to myself “I should probably start again, it was an amazing way to get rid of stress”.  I mean sure I’ve got friends to rant to.  And I do.  But there’s just something about writing to a group of people who don’t know me.  It’s my, not-so-secret, diary.

So from today on, I will, once again, try to write as much as possible.  Besides, you’ve all missed out on eons of photos, recipes and daily happenings.  I should probably update you :)

Stay tuned for tomorrows entry – Strawberry & Chocolate oat bars.  They’resoooooooooo good!

Make change happen.

8 Mar

ImageIf you have a Facebook or Twitter account you are very aware of the recent postings of Kony2012.  If you don’t, I’ll just assume that you are still very aware of the recent uproar over Kony2012.  However, if you’re not aware…  I’ll just say that I will never understand the evil that some people are.

It’s incredible to know how much we don’t know about the things that are going on outside of our backyards.  There is so much evil, corruption and harm going on that we either turn a blind eye or we are just too concerned with what is going on specifically in our own backyards.  We are too concerned with our own politics, our own lives and our own greed.  I’m not passing judgment on anyone.  Living your life the way you want to is completely your prerogative.  It is beyond obvious that I am no saint (far from it).

The YouTube videos, news feeds, documentaries and reports I have watched and read recently have slapped me in the face.  And it hurt!

This is not entirely about Kony2012.  This is about potential water shortages in third world countries, this is about children being killed, this is about our planet being used to the maximum -this is simply about awareness.

I’ll keep this relatively short.

  • There are over 66,000 children abducted by the LRA (the leader of which is Joseph Kony)
  • There are over 1 billion people in the world going to bed hungry
  • Nearly a billion people do not have access to clean and safe water
  • Close to half of all people in developing countries suffering at any given time from a health problem caused by water and sanitation deficits.
  • Approximately 72 million primary school age students are not in school
  • Over 15 million children have been orphaned due to HIV/AIDS

These are statistics that mean something to me.  These are issues that mean something to me.  I understand the mentality of one person can’t change the world.  Well, I understand why some would believe that.  I, personally, don’t believe it.  One person can change the world.  How?  Simple, staying informed and informing.  Thriving for change and making change happen.  You don’t have to be a billionaire (there’s only approximately 490+ billionaires!) to help people in need.  You just have to do something.  Anything.  You’re probably wondering, “preach much?? what are you doing?”.

I’m writing this.  Quite publicly.  I’ve had my problems with voicing my opinions in the open, but you know what, freedom of speech, right?!  I’m also watching and reading as much on things that I am concerned with, water shortages, hate crimes, killings, children being abducted and used for war, cancer, aids, OUR PLANET.  I know better informing isn’t ACTIVELY doing something, but it’s a start.  What comes next?  Informing those around you, finding organizations that you can work with or help directly (I know there are a few out there that just aren’t the bees knees), continuing to learn and heck, buying one less water bottle a day.

It’s the little things that make the worlds difference.  Little things add up and before you know it, you’re looking at something bigger than you.

I just can’t sit and listen to critiques about worldwide issues and people assuming that the “white man” is coming to the rescue.  I think that term is a load of POOP.  We should all be willing to help each other, our race or nationality shouldn’t matter.

Just take a look at all that has happened in the last 100 years, regardless of if you were alive or not.  That alone should make you want to do something, anything.

Here’s a bunch of sites I’ve been keeping up to date with:

The sites above are in no particular order, please visit them (if you choose to).  They are all brilliant in their own way.

Help make change, whatever battle it is you choose.

Here’s the video in regards to Kony 2012  (I highly recommend watching InvisibleChildren’s earlier films as well.  Also, watch Home, this is brilliant  also Tapped , Blue Gold: World Water Wars  and my favourite of all Flow: For love of water .  These are all amazing documentaries and only a handful of ones I appreciate.  More to come, soon :).
